Mestia is the cultural heart of the Svan people. Though their language is different to Georgian, the Svan epitomise all that is Georgian and represent the heart of Georgian culture. There are some fine examples of protective towers in Mestia and one is open to the public. This and the neighbouring house dates back to the 12th century, the interior of the house has been preserved with original woodwork and furnishings dating back to this time.
One of the villages Ushguli in Svaneti is situated in 2200 meters up from the sea level and is highest populated place in Europe. High mountains, ancient towers, fortresses are typical for Svaneti, where local people still live. These towers have been used to protect people from enemies since ancient times. The people in Svaneti are distinguished for their strong character; the nature is severe and completely corresponds to their habits and character.
Ushba - the most beautiful, challenging mountain of Caucasus. More than one hundred years history of climbing of this mountain has many heroic and dramatic episodes. All the history of world mountain climbing is deeply connected with this strange name - Ushba, the name, which even local people - Svanetians, who live at foot of it, can not explain clearly.
