The fortress Ujarma was established during the King Aspaturi times (III century). The fortress is located on the right embankment of the river Iori on the high hill. According to the chronicler the fortress was renewed in the V century by the King Vakhtang Gorgasali. Ujarma was destroyed in X century by the Arabian conquerors and it was again renewed by the King George III (1156-1184) and the country treasury was established in the fortress.
Near Telavi in the village of Shuamta you will see the fragments of Dzveli-Shuamta and Akhali Shuamta monasteries (old Shuamta and new Shauamta).
Dzveli Shuamta is a complex of several ancient churches. The small church standing in the foreground is dated the 5th century, the other two – bigger and smaller domical churches – the 7th century. The churches have the 12th-century paintings.
Akhali Shuamta Monastery in the 16 th century. This monastery is still active. The big temple, the bell tower, the fencing parts of the monastery complex. According to the legend the monastery was constructed by Tina, the Kakhetin queen. When she was a little girl she had a dream where she was told to build an orthodox temple.Later Tina took the veil there.
Alexander Chavchavadze museum.Located 10 km from Telavi there is a big village of Tsinandali , the well-known wine-growing settlement where the patrimonial estate of Chavchavadze princes is. The museum is surrounded by magnificent park with a chapel where Alexander Griboedov married Nina Chavchavadze. In this park Alexander Chavchavadze founded the wine cellars in hopes of turning the traditional craft into an industry.
Ancient academy of Ikalto is famous for the fact that Shota Rustaveli, the outstanding Georgian poet of the 12 th century, used to study there. The academy is a part of St. Xenon monastic complex, located 8 km from Telavi.
The Kvetera Fortress was a residence for Kings and Eristavis of Kakheti. Kvetera Fortress was one of the most powerful strongholds in X-XI century kingdom, playing a big role in history of wars.The Kvetera Fortress is surrounded by the fence of cobble and cut stones. Inside the fence, there is an acropolis sited at the highest point, involving the palace and a Church that dates back to X century.
Gremi Monastery - was the royal capital, trade, economic and cultural center of Kakheti. It is distinguished for the most beautiful locations and historical importance. The monastery is still active, where monks continue their activities and even produce their own wine.
Historic town of Nekresi, founded in II-I century, is situated in Kvareli Region, at a distance of 150 km from Tbilisi. In IV century, King Trdat built a church here, one of the oldest temples in Georgia, where one of the 13 Syrian Fathers Abibos (Nekreseli) settled in VI century. Small basilica, which dates to IV century, is one of the oldest churches that have reached our times.
